Canada will represent Israel in Venezuela

March 3,2009 Dominion Paper

Following the expulsion of Israeli Diplomats from Venezuela, Canada's Minister of State for Latin America Peter Kent confirmed that Canada will represent Israel's diplomatic interests in Venezuela. Venezuela broke ties with Israel during Operation Cast Lead in January. Two weeks later, Israel did the same. Venezuela's Foreign Minister, Nicolas Maduro, responded saying, "We are proud that the State of Israel, led by these criminals, made this decision." A Canadian official confirmed that Canada will be taking up Israel's interests at the Canadian Embassy. Canada also currently does the same for Cuba. Canada has always been a great ally with Israel. They were the only member of the United Nations Human Right Council to vote against a January 12 Resolution that condemned Israel for their actions in Gaza.
This support from Canada while helpful does not solve the problem of lacking significant Israeli representation within Venezuela. Canada will not always be able to represents its best interests and that of Israel. For Israel to have a true say they need legitimate representation. Also the fact that Venezuela made the statement that they think the Israeli government is filled with criminals proves that they are misinformed. Unfortunately they have already spread this information to the Venezuelan community and greatly damaged Israel's reputation
