Israel will receive Venezuelan Jews "In Crisis"

El Universal January 12, 2010

Due to the economic crisis, the speaker for the Jewish Agency for Israel, Michael Yankelowicz confirmed that Israel will receive anyone "in need". The statement also mentioned that the Venezuelan Jewish community is free to travel to Israel and the Jewish Agency will provide them with assistance if needed. When comparing the 2001 economic crisis in Argentina to this one, Yankelowisz noted that Venezuela's has a racial political undertone, while Argentina's was merely economical. Since they helped the Argentinian Jews they will now also step in and help the Venezuelans. He also noted that there has always been Venezuelan Jews who have made aliyah and vice versa, and that there has not been an increase or decrease up to now due to the crisis.
This invitation to the Venezuelan Jewish community is the first invitation for emigration and many may take the opportunity due to the crisis and the rampant anti-semitism. While some may be resilient to leave due to the issues in Israel at least now they have the opportunity and a safe haven if needed. There could be a rapid increase of emigration from Venezuela to Israel since it is the only country where the Jews could assimilate into society and attain visa's quickly.
