Venezuelan Jewish Community asks for an Invesigation of Hostility Against Them

June 2, 2009 El Universal
The Jewish community denounced in front of the Organization of American States(OAS) of their members that live in Latin America and specifically in Venezuela. " In the past few months we have witnessed attacks against members that integrate the Latin community, attacked only for being Jewish", said Sergio Widder a leader in the Jewish community of Buenos Aires. He went on to say that the attacks have come all too frequent, citing the taking of Jewish property and the attacks on the synagogue in Venezuela. Widder confirmed, "There is no known response of the authorities in Venezuela. To the contrary, the reaction has been a tolerance that has stimulated new aggressions." He went on to say that, " In every democratic society there are intolerant groups that take violent action through statements of hate against the minority. The radical distinction that we should formulate is how the government reacts with these incidents, some that avoid and others that sanction." Due to this situation the Center Simon Wiesenthal of Buenos Aires ask the OAS to investigate the antisemitism within Venezuela, to provide conclusions and recommendations. Their immediate reaction was unknown. However, they did meet with leaders in Latin America to discuss the problems that tear apart their nations.
It is good that other countries are finally realizing the gravity of the situation within Venezuela and standing up for them. The situation needs to be dealt with aggressively and since other forms have not worked, it is time for government institutions to step in and stand up against Chavez and his corrupt government.
